About The Stone Mind

Justin Roth is a writer, climber, photographer, and marketing dork who lives in California.

Formerly a magazine editor and marketer at Petzl, he’s now a marketing manager at Patagonia. However, none of the opinions or views expressed on this blog are in any way condoned by or representative of Patagonia.

The title of this blog is a reference to a Zen story. In it, a Zen teacher named Hogen asks some traveling monks, “There is a big stone. Do you consider it to be inside or outside your mind?”

One of the monks replied: “From the Buddhist viewpoint everything is an objectification of mind, so I would say that the stone is inside my mind.”

“Your head must feel very heavy,” observed Hogen, “if you are carrying around a stone like that in your mind.”
